How to make it all work together?
Cairn and UVG are a bit at odds with each other. Below you will find what worked for me to mash them together all smooch and smooth.
Cairn changes
- for character generation, use UVG backgrounds and quirk from page 2&3
- let the players use these as powerful traits to travel the steppes (e.g. a trapper might always Forage for +1 supplies than otherwise would)
- Rainbowlanders can change their physical characteristics at any new session start, keep this in mind if you stick to the book, I would suggest nailing down pros and cons of character appearance with the whole table (okay you got wings, you can fly, does that mean you have less slots to carry? perhaps your Strength drops by 4 points?)
- lean into the weirdness, propose that the rolled Cairn equipment is a seed of an idea, maybe their crossbow can be a rugged ceramic rifle, or their sword is actually a guitarmace that makes dissonant sounds as it impacts someone
- HP is ignored when character is overburdened (carrying more than 10 stones), instead of carrying exactly 10 slots
- healing HP requires 1 day of rest, tally this for the whole caravan if necessary
- healing Ability scores requires 1 full week and a healer/medicine
- decide on an appropriate amount to heal (+1? +1d4? +1d6?)
UVG changes
- use flat d20 rolls for Discoveries / Haggling / Market Research / Forage / Study
- I know this is not a very satisfying answer.. but it works, and you can award bonuses to the roll and/or the outcome based on appropriate backgrounds or traits
- instead of Carousing, have your players set traits or skills to target and learn, define how long it takes to learn, and at which points do they need to fork cash over to advance
- how many weeks does it take?
- how much cash per week?
- do they need to find a teacher first?
